Bite indicators signal the bite visually or audibly while you keep your eyes elsewhere: conversation, meal, light sleep in bivouac. It's the central gear of waiting fishing techniques where the rod stays at rest on a tripod or bank stick.

You will find mechanical indicators (clip-on bells, suspended squirrels, rod hangers) for surfcasting and casting, autonomous audible indicators (battery rod beeps, LED + sound swingers) for carp and night fishing, electronic indicators with remote receivers (for bivouacs where you turn off the light above the rods), and indicator arms (rod butt rests) to position hangers correctly.
